My mother taught me which leaf to chew for tooth-pain,

the feather for fortune,

but finally laid me down

amidst a vast ceremony of smoke

where, as from the forest's lost patience,

a creature began whispering

over the speeches one world over of fathers.

Bamboo poles

fluttering with bills dip, changing hands.

I am gone out from the land of my people

and through voices bled as by distance,

the dark of the mountains floats down

into the shape that commands me.
