“Everything is different now,” said Kalunga. “We can strike a deal!”

“We can?” asked Max. He flicked Kalunga’s arm off his shoulder.

“Indeed,” replied Kalunga. “I won’t turn you into a cockroach if you bring me these present-day items. And do me a small favor concerning the palace.”

“What favor?” asked Max suspiciously.

“I would like you to retrieve something of great personal value,” Kalunga explained. “A family heirloom. You see that Idris and Sirus have scarab beetle amulets round their necks?”

Max nodded.

“When I awoke, I found that mine had been stolen. It is not worth much. But it is of great sentimental value. It was taken from me before I was buried. And I have a pretty good idea who took it.”

“Who?” asked Max.

“Inside Gazellion’s palace is a workshop,” said Kalunga. “This workshop belonged to the pharaoh’s chief embalmer, Quodi.”

An embalmer. What a delightful job!

“Quodi was—how should I put this—a bit of a thief. He was well-known for putting his fingers into more than just dead people’s nostrils.”

Gross!

“I believe that Quodi took my amulet before embalming me.”

Max frowned. “There is one tiny problem,” he said.

“Yes?” asked Kalunga.

“The palace isn’t quite how it was when you left it. It’s mostly buried under sand.”

“I do not want excuses!” thundered Kalunga. The sweetness had gone from his voice. “Bring it back by nightfall with the modern items. Or you will find yourself turned into a disgusting cockroach!”

“If I bring you your amulet, perhaps you could do me a favor in return. Could you let me know what you’ve done with the Sorcerer’s Venom?” asked Max.

“I wish to hear no more words from you!” thundered Kalunga. “BEGONE!”

Max decided not to chance his luck again. He headed for the doorway. But before he left, he turned around for a second. Sirus had just handed over his beetle amulet to Kalunga, who then vanished into thin air.

Where did he go? Could it be to the place where they’ve hidden the Sorcerer’s Venom? I’ll have to check it out when I return.
