Chapter Sixteen

Gallivanting Around

Braeneil

“Alright. What are our next steps?” Zac asks as we walk down the front steps, his driver pulling up.

“It seems like my to-do list just keeps getting longer and longer. I need to free your sister from whatever charm they have on her, if it even is a charm. Which means I need to make some phone calls. We have to find this Annabelle so we can try to shed some light on where the girls went that night. Any ideas where we should start? I’m assuming since we are now leaving, that it is not as easy as her being invited to the party?” I sigh at the shake of Zac’s head. Of course, it’s not that easy. I’ll also need to find time to go and check out the dragon problem and talk to the prince of the fae on why there is an abundance of them wreaking havoc lately.

“Annabelle?” He scoffs, “Nice girl but no she wouldn’t have been invited. She and Marly liked to get in a bit of trouble together. She’s had a rough start in life. Her family was mauled by a rogue shifter pack. She escaped by staying at a friend’s house that night. The rouges were never found which had many people wondering if it was actual shifters who mauled them. She is lucky to stay with her own kind, rather than being placed into a supernatural orphanage.”

“She doesn’t sound all that lucky. Her family is dead.” I respond quietly as we climb into the back of the limo.

Not only is her family dead but because of how they died, she could be seen as at fault. They couldn’t prove who it was, and I think that’s the saddest part. My heart aches for the little girl who lost her family and then was seen as partly at fault. That couldn’t be easy. Zac is right though; it’s best she is with others of her kind than the orphanage. Supernatural orphanages should have been shut down ages ago. Their viewpoints and actions border on archaic. I would know.

“Yes, you’re right. However, the clan she is staying with is nice enough. They are next in line for a seat on the council. She doesn’t seem unhappy the few times I’ve met her. Should I have the driver take us straight there or do you wish to go home and change first?” His voice is husky as he asks, intention clear. My heartbeat picks up as my nerves rush into hyper-drive once again. While going home to change with Zac sounds like the night would end in a fun way, it also sounds dangerous. What is it with Zac tonight? I mean sure, he has always been handsome, but I am on a case. I have to be focusing on finding Marly. Not on how Zac’s lips felt on mine. Not on how strong his legs were, holding me against the wall. Not about his eyes heating, burning through me.

Zac coughs, breaking me from my memories.
