Chapter Twenty
Missyâs phone rang, and although she didnât recognize the number, something told her to answer.
âMelissa!â Billy Monroeâs twang rang out from the speaker. âI been tryinâ to get you for an hour now. Where are you?â
âSorry, I was in the shower. Iâm on my way to see Rusty Crueler. Any news on the murder investigation? Are we off the hook yet?â
âWhy would you want to see Crueler? You sellinâ your house?â
âNot exactly.â Missy wasnât sure if she should tell her lawyer-by-default about her fact-finding mission in progress.
âListen, like I told Salma, you girls ainât off the hook just yet. Sure, you got alibis, but as long as Wanda Ackerman is pressing the Sheriff for an arrest, theyâre going to be keeping close tabs on you. Now, how does Rusty figure into your plans? Just tell me, Miss Fitz. Iâm your sworn counsel.â
âMy mom seems to think he might know something about who would stand to gain from Martin Ackermanâs death, real estate-wise. Something about commissions and commercial property management. Iâve known Rusty since I was a kid. Iâm just going to go down there and ask him what he knows. Iâm sure heâll help--â
âDonât you dare go down to that manâs office!â Billy yelled. Missy could hear very loud Bluegrass Music pipe up in the background. âLet the police do their job!â
âWhatâs that, Billy? You at a concert?â
âYou heard me, Miss Fitz! Donât you dare--â
âCanât hear you over the banjos, Billy, sorry!â Missy hung up and turned her phone to silent. Iâll touch base with Fred Nickerson after I talk to Rusty, she thought. Heâs the brains behind our defense, after all.
Across the street from Bearwallow Square stood an old Federalist style home called the Henderson House, boasting a combination antique and home decor shop on the first floor, and a slate of one-room offices upstairs. Rusty Crueler, Brown County Brokerage, read a small sign attached to a hanging chain of other such shingles, below the name of the main attraction, This and Thats. Missy had never really paid attention to the sign, but today she noticed that there was an empty shingle on the chain, and she wondered if that corresponded to an empty office space for rent, upstairs.
Not that I need an office, she thought. What would I need an office for? Iâve got a great office at home...with lots of company.
Missy parked along the sidewalk behind a bright yellow VW Beetle, vintage 1960s. She recognized the car right away as Fred Nickersonâs. As she was climbing out of her van, Fred emerged from the front door of the Henderson House.
âHere to do some shopping, I hope,â he said to Missy, stopping her on the sidewalk.
âActually, my mom said that Rusty--â
âThat Rusty Crueler might help you out with some info on the Ackerman murder? I thought you might get there. Beat you to it.â
âDid you see him, already? What did he say?â
Rusty Crueler emerged from Henderson House, himself. He nodded his head toward Missy, and she called to him as he rushed the other direction.
