Chapter 18

‘Well, I suppose it means he’s not going to go hungry, at least for a while,’ Neil Two surreptitiously hissed to his friend as, back once more on the track, they followed on behind the tiger leading the way.

‘But if not; it would take the two of us to satisfy him, going by the way he wolfed down that knight.’

Neil Two found he had to agree with Neil, noting as if for the first time that they were indeed rather small in comparison to the late knight.

Had they always been so small?

He’d never realised it before if they had been.

I suppose, he thought, that we’ve always hung around together, with no one to compare ourselves to.

He noticed too, for the first time, that he’d badly scratched himself on the bushes as they’d fruitlessly searched for Neil Three.

They’d decided, naturally, that they had to be on the way, hoping that Neil Three would catch up with them at some point if he’d managed to avoid the sprites’ clutches.

Could the tiger smell blood?

Undoubtedly!

Might it stir his hunger for more?

Undoubtedly thrice over!

He observed his friend, who’d also been badly scratched, but seemed merrily unaware of it.

Good.

That meant that if he washed off his blood, while his friend didn’t…

It would, surely, at least give him the chance to run for it!
