A glum Craveaux sat in the high minister’s chamber with his robe open across his chest, making visible the pulsating green light around his neck. His hands clutching the armrests, he seemed to stare at nothing. Overhead, dozens of nymphflies buzzed chaotically about, their bodies a perfect childlike form the length of a man’s hand. Gossamer wings, similar to a butterfly’s, held them aloft, working back and forth in smooth effortless gyrations. They circled lazily about high enough inside the chamber to remain out of Craveaux’s dreaded reach, yet from their vantage point they could see—and hear—all that transpired.

All of sudden Craveaux burst from his chair, throwing his arms up in wild gyrations.

“Sickly!” he screamed as if struck by terrible pain.

The old man stumbled in like life or death hung in the balance. He bowed, clutching his chest to calm his frail racing heart.

“Yes, high minister, what is your bidding, your most high greatness, master of the kingdom ... supreme noble, kind, highest ruler.”

“Enough sniveling. Command General Furion to attack the Forbit Clan in the Forest of Perpetual Stink. There he will find the fugitive troll and the two little girls. He is to bring those little girls to me at once.”

“The Forbit Clan? Forest of Perpetual Stink. The little girls? Yes, your high ministerness. What of the troll and the Forbits?”

“Dispose of them,” Craveaux said dismissively.

“High minister? Surely we need their magic.”

“Once Craveaux has that little girl's ba ...” the high minister censored himself. Some things must remain secret, even from the people trusted most. “Craveaux will be the most powerful in the land. Now go!”

Sickly trembled as he bowed his way out of the chamber.

Back in his chair, the high minister ruminated.

“Soon Craveaux will have what he needs to enslave the last of those vile dragons.”

As the high minister left his chair to pace in his chamber, the nymphflies formed into a tight circle before fluttering out en mass through the highest window.
