Thomas walked into Lisa’s dark apartment. The daylight was starting to break outside so there was no natural sunlight coming in through the closed shades to lighten up her place. Thomas clicked on the light switch and jumped back. Tito was sitting in Lisa’s living room with his pistol aimed squarely at Thomas. He stood there, frozen.
“Thomas, I presume?” Tito asked.
“Who are you?” Thomas replied nervously.
“Who I am isn’t important! Why don’t you come have a seat?” Tito instructed.
Thomas did as he was told. He went over and sat opposite Tito on the couch. Thomas’s nerves were at full tilt. Whoever this was, he wasn’t a cop.
“Relax.” Tito sensed how uneasy Thomas was.
“It’s kind of hard to, with a gun pointed at me. Look, if this is a robbery, please, go ahead and take whatever it is you came to get or need. It’s really not that serious.”
“Do I look like some crackhead needing to commit a robbery? Please don’t insult me.”
“I’m sorry. I wasn’t trying to insult you. I just don’t want any trouble. I just—”
Tito cut him off. “Look, my friend, I need a little bit of information and then I’m out of your hair. I heard that you might be able to help me solve a seemingly pressing issue.”
Confused, Thomas didn’t know how to reply. He sat there, waiting for Tito to fill in the blanks. However, Tito continued to stare at him until Thomas finally opened his mouth, “And how can I do that?”
“Earlier today, there was a murder over on Minnesota Avenue that you might’ve witnessed.”
Thomas quickly jumped. “I don’t know anything about that.”
Tito picked his pistol back up. “Now, before you answer, I want you to think long and hard about where a lie will get you over simply coming out and being honest with me. I can be the nicest person in the world, but if I need to be something else, that I can also be. Now, are you sure that’s the answer you want to stick with?”
Thomas recognized that his life was now in jeopardy. If he acted like he knew nothing at all, things probably wouldn’t go well for him. He needed to give Tito something, but what to give him troubled him. He didn’t know what to say. There was no way he was going to give his best friend up. He needed to think of something and he needed to think of it fast.
Tito finished, “So, I’ll ask again, is there anything about the murder that you would like to tell me?”
“All I know is that Jose Benitez was murdered. I don’t know by who or nothing like that; just the fact that he was murdered today.”
“So why did you try to act like you knew nothing at all?”
“Because, this is Jose Benitez we’re talking about. Who wants their name associated in any way with his murder? I know all about the Eastside Riderz and Omar Benitez. I definitely didn’t want any association to his nephew’s murder; especially since I don’t know anything about it.
