So Mini opened her ears. She heard a car honk somewhere far away, she heard a vegetable seller call loudly. She heard the birds and she heard Baba laugh in the house. But the loudest noise that Mini heard was the sound of water falling.

‘Chitra Maushi,’ Mini gasped. ‘Why are all the lights still on in Mary Aunty’s house?’

‘Oh, Mini,’ Amma said. ‘Stop worrying!’

‘And why is the water flowing from the tap in that house?’ Mini asked. ‘Why hasn’t anyone turned off the tap? Don’t they know that it is wrong to waste water and electricity?’

And then finally Chitra Maushi agreed that something was not right in the house next door. That is why she, Amma and Baba went to see what was happening. And that is how they found Mary Aunty lying on the floor. Mary Aunty had fallen down and hurt herself. That is why she had not turned off the lights or the tap.

And that was why the silence of the street was broken by the wail of an ambulance. The street was filled with bright lights and people came out of their houses to see what was happening. Manoj and Mini were there too, looking around at everything. And that was how Mini saw something that made her eyes open wide. A car was parked in front of a house. ‘Amma,’ Mini said. But Amma was busy making Mary Aunty comfortable.

‘Chitra Maushi,’ Mini called. But Chitra Maushi was going to the hospital with Mary Aunty and she said, ‘Not now, Mini!’ And Baba might have listened to Mini, but he was talking to someone on the phone, telling them that their mother had fallen down and was being taken to the hospital.

So Mini had to take her questions to bed with her. Amma came in softly a little later to say, ‘Mini, Mary Aunty is fine. And it is all because of you!’
