A CHANCE TO PAUSE

Mistakes often happen when we are being mindless, perhaps not counting stitches or watching our process as it occurs. This mindlessness shows itself in our personalities, too, as we rush about following along a path, without stopping to look where we are, or where we might be going.

I first started sewing on a machine many years ago, and would be frustrated every time I made a mistake and had to use the quick unpick to pull back my stitches. But over time, and learning to approach life in a different way, I started to recognize that making a mistake allowed me the space to create change. At this point I could either continue on and become frustrated, or I could mindfully pay more attention to my work. The very gentle reminder of needing to unpick knotted threads gives us the opportunity to straighten our backs, breathe in deeply, and be grateful for a moment to pause in our work, to reassess it and our approach to what we are making.
