Noting
Feel-See-Hear describes one parameter of mindfulness; exploring more deeply where you direct your attention. The other parameter is how you pay attention. You have already practised this just now, when you “gently but intently” focused on some aspect of experience and used a label to help you monitor your experience. This process is called noting. Since you are separating the strands of sensory experience into distinct streams, you have the luxury of diving deeply into how you are experiencing each one. If Feel-See-Hear helps you explore the vast world of moment-by-moment experience, noting helps you go beyond the superficial glance that is usually required of MoMo. With noting, you deeply experience all your senses.
You can compare noting to looking through a microscope. Your everyday attention is like looking at a speck of dirt, perhaps wondering if you should wash your hands. With noting attention, it is like your eyes (indeed all of your senses) are able to see at much greater magnification: noticing details, gradations and connections that weren’t available to you before.
Noting develops mindful awareness by clearly acknowledging the existence of sensory experiences, then gently, intently focusing on them at a pace that works for you.
Noting consists of a rhythmic pulsing of deep acts of attention, paced in a way that works for you (for example, every three to five seconds). Each pulse has two parts:
An initial noticing or acknowledging of a particular sensory event
A short period of intently focusing on that experience
