"Are you sure you've eaten enough?" Reldis asked as she gave me her hand, her expression serious again. "I was just teasing, you know, so if you want the rest of what's there I'll be more than happy to wait until you finish it."

"I'll finish the rest as soon as we find out if you can do what I do," I answered, paying attention to the arm attached to the hand I held. There was a faint and distant ache in that arm, an ache Reldis had gotten so used to that she no longer felt it consciously. "I was wondering how the technique would do if there was nothing for it to heal, but since we do have something I'm going to merge our minds, and then you have to pay close attention."

"Merge - " Reldis began, clearly the start of a question, but her gasp said the question had been answered in the most direct way. Our minds were now merged, so I did that deep healing on her that forced the body into repairing itself rather than accept the repairing from some outside source. The ache disappeared from her arm instantly, of course, and when I dissolved the merge I found her sitting open-mouthed, staring at me.

"But that's so easy," she said after a good minute of staring, some kind of shock only now beginning to fade. "I could have done that at any time If I'd been able to see that it should be done But I didn't see it, and neither did anyone else Why didn't we see it? How could we have missed something that obvious? How could we not have seen?"

"Extra strength seems to give you a different picture of what's around you," I garbled out in answer while I ate some of what was left of the food on the tray. "You start to look at things kind of sideways, and then you see things you never noticed before. None of you saw it because you weren't strong enough."

"But you are strong enough, and I love you!" she all but shouted, suddenly coming alive again. "Our lack of strength is the fault of those slimy Amalgamation pretend-people, so I'll curse them instead of myself while I tell everyone the good news. Can I get you anything, Jilin? Do anything for you?"

She now stood next to the pillow she'd been sitting on, making it easier for me to see that although she wore a light-blue tunic and dark blue, ankle-length skirt as well as boots, the clothing was only faintly like that of other Rimilian women. And she also didn't speak like a Rimilian, so she must have been an import who didn't have my problems with the world.

"There are two things you can do for me," I said, and some of her excitement calmed in the face of my new lack of amusement. "I'd first of all like to make sure that the transfer slip is available to take me up to the orbiting transport even if my teammates haven't made it back yet.
