CHAPTER 13

GOOGLE’S MAGIC WAND

A while back, while Googling this or that, I noticed some websites would come up in the search results with a picture. It turned out these were called “blended results” and those website listings were being pulled from recent submissions to Google News.

Google News is nothing more than an aggregator - meaning it pulls news stories from various websites and compiles a list of links to articles that are relevant to what the user is searching for – but it is super powerful for getting traffic and traffic to your websites is the key to monetizing. If you were searching for a given topic, wouldn’t the listing with a picture grab your attention faster than the listings without pictures?

At first I thought the news section was reserved for big guns like CNN and MSNBC, but then I started to notice that there were a lot of news sites that I have never heard of. These were small, independent sites, some that were isolated to news about one particular niche. I found news sites that were specific to finance news, sports news, and just about any niche news you could think of. I even found approved news sites that were all about the porn industry. These sites appeared like they could be major news organizations, but my gut feeling was they were small sites, run by guys like me and I wanted in. I wanted my listings to show up fast and with a picture.

There was very little information out there about becoming an official “Google News Site”, so I winged it. I made my poker site look “newsy” and I applied via Google’s online application form. Several days later, I received an email from the Google News team telling me my site was not approved and would not be indexed in the Google News directory. Bummer. I moved on.

Now that I had some money in the bank and time to work on new projects, I decided to take my goal of becoming a Google News publisher off the back burner and really see what it would take to get a site listed.

It made my mouth water thinking about the amount of traffic you could get from having an approved Google News site. Ordinarily, when you post something to the web, you have to wait for the page to be indexed and then you have to hope that it gets ranked high, so people will actually find your site. Sure, you can help the process by creating backlinks from other pages or getting other website owners to post links, but all this takes time. When you are a Google News approved site, you post and it gets ranked within minutes! Sometimes you only get ranked for a few days, but you can rank with keywords that you normally would not have a shot at getting ranked with, due to the huge number of competition. You could easily get tens of thousands of clicks to your site, even if you are only appearing on the front page for a few days.
