“Here we are, Millie! We’re at the country house!”

She jumped up and let loose with a frenzy of excited barking.

Millie and I pulled into Apple Alley and stopped at our alley door. I lifted her out of the car seat, and we went in from the side porch. I put her down, and she took off for the back door, scratching at it madly.

“Daddy’s coming. Slow down, will ya? Hey, hey little girl, take it easy! I have to put the car in the garage, be right back, promise!” As soon as I returned, I opened the back door, and Millie went racing around the yard looking for a stick, chasing this way, that way.

“Get the stick” is a game I started when we first introduced Millie to the house. The backyard was perfect; it was fenced in so we didn’t have to worry about her running off. I would gather up a bunch of sticks, small enough for her to handle. As soon as she spied my handful, she’d be off on a jumping spree at my feet, watching my hand closely. Then I’d toss one. “There it goes! Go get it Mill!” Well, that little girl was fast!

Most times, she watched the stick sail through the air and predicted where it would land. She would always overrun the stick, many times falling over it in her excitement. Then she’d grab it and come running back. But she never let it go! I’d have to get her attention by tossing another stick. The game lasted until I was too tired to continue. Millie could play for hours!

The Milford house was precious. We furnished it with antiques purchased from local shops. The dining room had a period farmer’s table with side drawers. We stored our dinnerware in an old pie cabinet Ro bought, and we found a beautiful chandelier made of cut green glass. I designed and built a sideboard narrow enough to fit in the long hallway just off the dining room. Two French doors led into the living room. The living room wasn’t very large, so we furnished it with a modest sofa and matching armchair. It was cozy and comfortable!

The kitchen was truly special. With help from our kitchen designer, we chose maple-wood cabinets—two of which had glass fronts and were lighted inside—and a soapstone counter-top. There were two sinks, the main one with a bay window that looked out onto the backyard and a small vegetable sink on the opposite side. It was so easy to cook in that kitchen!
