ODBC Data Source Administrator (shown in Figure 15.43) enables you to create and manage Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) entries called Data Source Names (DSNs) that point ODBC-aware applications to shared databases. Once again, you’ll probably have explicit instructions if you need to use this.

CHECKPOINT
Objective 15.01: Maintaining Windows It is important that you are prepared to recover quickly from problems and keep Windows updated with the latest security patches from Microsoft. By managing user accounts, a system administrator can set permissions for users and audit their access to files and network resources. Automatic scheduled maintenance such as backups and drive scans can keep a system chugging along. From time to time, you may need to cull startup programs as they accumulate to keep the system performing well and starting quickly. The System Information utility enables you to audit system hardware for problems and conflicts, and the Microsoft Management Console helps you build custom utilities.
Objective 15.02: Optimizing Windows Removing applications that are no longer needed is an important part of housekeeping. When possible, use the uninstall program that came with the application. You can add or remove Windows components as needed. It’s also important to keep device drivers up to date with Windows Update, the software that came with the device, or at the manufacturer’s website; Device Manager is a good tool for checking and updating hardware, drivers, and resources. Resource tracking with Task Manager and Performance tools can identify bottlenecks to resolve. Windows also includes tools such as Component Services and ODBC Data Source Administrator for configuring the system to support custom applications developed by or for an organization.
