Chapter Eight

Wyatt (Sparrow)

I looked at Dragon.

“What?” he questioned.

“Lore is having the baby.”

“When? NOW?” he exclaimed.

I nodded. I wasn’t sure I was processing this all correctly.

Just as we were both getting on our bikes, a car pulled up and stopped blocking us in.

“Can I help you?” Dragon asked walking over to be next to me.

I could sense something wasn’t quite right with them.

“The Defenders, right? Midnight ones?” one of the guys spat.

Dragon nodded.

“Great. We have a message for you.” The man crossed his arms and flashed his teeth.

“Vampire,” I muttered.

“Damn straight. Which makes you both Daemortals.” He laughed.

“What do you want?” I growled.

“Feisty. Just wanted to let you know that we know. And if you all don’t start backing down off our shit then we will expose you. Which you know the council doesn’t go for. They already aren’t happy about your immortal baby.”

Dragon held his arm out, blocking me from ripping the guy to shreds.

“Think about it. Back off or be exposed.”

They backed up and got into their car, pulling out of the dead-end road quickly.

“What the fuck was that about?” the police chief asked from behind us.

Dragon and I both spun around to see him standing at the edge of the woods.

“Look, we really can’t explain right now. My wife is in labor and I need to go. Now.”

He pulled out his gun and pointed it at us.

“Neither of you are leaving until someone gives me some answers!” he demanded.

I looked at Dragon. This was a spot I know neither of us wanted to be in. This was the exact reason that Dragon always wanted to make sure he was with us.

I held up my hands.

“What do you want to know?” I sighed. The only way out of this was to give him what he wanted.

“What is that Day word he called you?”

I sucked in a breath. “Well really, this should be something you talk to Glen about. Not us.”

“Glen isn’t here.”

I nodded. “Valid point. Okay, we are Daemortals. Our club the Midnight Defenders is just that. We defend the town and certain paranormal creatures from the ones that have gone rogue,” I explained.

He shook his head like he didn’t quite understand. I couldn’t blame him. I didn’t understand at first either. Actually, when Glen came to me, I thought he was nuts and trying to pull a fast one on me. But once he showed me what he really was, my entire world changed. Everything I was led to believe was a myth was, in fact, real. It’s a scary thing finding out that monsters are real.

“I know it’s crazy to hear. Vampires, witches, ghosts. They are all real. And some of them are what we call Rogue Runners. They divert from the good and do their own thing. They are uncontrollable. They are what we defend others from. That and demons. There are demons walking the earth that are all for chaos.”

I glanced up at my watch on my wrist. I was running out of time.

“Look, I
