Make sure you become proficient with keywords so you can succeed

in the world of advertising, whether it’s with generating revenue (with

programs like AdSense) or when you’re paying for advertising (as in pay-

per-click advertising in programs like AdWords). Keywords are critical

because you want your prospective customers to be able to find you. They

may not be necessarily searching for you, but they most certainly will be

searching for what you may be offering (be it content, products, or services).

Generate more targeted traffic to your sites means generating more clicks, which

in turn will mean more revenue from AdSense.

Ad placement is the third consideration

To achieve AdSense success, you ultimately need to consider where you place the

ads. Whether you're using the site yourself (you can easily do your own blog

at www.blogger.com) or you have someone technically helping you with a website,

you need to decide where to place the ads. (Refer to Chapter 4 about setting up your own blog or website, or getting help.)

Ads come in blocks (definable segments in square or rectangular shapes on a web

page that contain AdSense ads) and can either be horizontal (rectangular shaped)

or vertical (square or rectangular). (See Figure 12-1 shows an example of a horizontal ad, whereas Figure 12-2demonstrates a vertical ad.) Illustration courtesy of William Donato

Advertising professionals have differing views on placement, but

the latest thinking is that vertical placement and to the top right area is

optimal. Many folks like to test out various methods of placement and

analyze over time which placement strategies have worked best. No matter

how sophisticated or cool the technology, some tried-and-true wisdom

keeps coming back. In this case, testing and testing again is as good now as

ever.
