He was my best friend’s uncle. I knew him. I liked him. He was nice to me. He bought us

Italian ices from Vito’s Pizzeria whenever he visited.

When Debbie’s brother Michael spilled an entire waxed cup of Coke on my leg, I ran inside to get cleaned up. It was only Uncle Ernesto and me. I told him what had happened. He got a weird look in his eyes and said in an odd voice, “Let me feel how wet you are.” Then he put his hand near my crotch.

It made me sick inside. I knew it was wrong. I knew grown men shouldn’t touch young girls. “No,” I told him and pulled away. He looked wounded, hurt. But I left anyway.

I was only 12.

“I was only trying to help,” he called after me.

No. You weren’t.
