Like Muḥammad Aḥmad’s appointment to be the mahdī, the order to perform hijra to Jabal Qadīr was given to him by the Prophet. Muḥammad Aḥmad says time and again that hijra is a commandment included both in the Qurʾān and in the prophetic sunna. Economic or social reasons cannot serve as an excuse for refraining from performing it. Quoting Qurʾānic verses and prophetic traditions, Muḥammad Aḥmad asserts that the existence of dependants cannot be used as a reason to stay at home: the muhājir’s family who stays behind will be taken care of by God himself.109 Tending a field cannot serve as an excuse either, because “with God are things that are better and more lasting” (mā ʿinda Allāh khayrun wa abqā) (than any agricultural produce). And, indeed, the mahdī’s economic conditions improved greatly after his hijra to Qadīr and God provided for him abundantly. Furthermore, the pain caused by the separation from the family is less than the divine punishment inflicted on those who refrain from performing the hijra. Nevertheless, if nothing else is feasible, it is permissible to perform the hijra together with the family.110
