Arriving home Jonas could think of nothing but sleep. The mad homeless man was nowhere to be found. Jonas took the last whiskey bottle from his bag and set it near his door and went inside. Maybe it wasn’t a good idea but it brought comfort to some, at least. Something Jonas rarely felt.

He took one of the new pills and fell into a hard and dreamless slumber. When he’d come to, he had no idea what time it was or how long he’d slept. Dragging himself to the bathroom he took his time showering, something he rarely did as water could run out or grow cold if one took too long with ministrations. He didn’t care today.

He brushed his teeth, shaved his hair off on the sides and shaved the top down to a severely short afro, ran a bit of castor oil through it and got dressed in the last clean jumpsuit he had. Then he fixed some spiced tea. He dropped a few cloves, a cinnamon stick and cardamom pods in a silken bag and plugged in the kettle and sat down and thought about turning on the police scanner, but decided to mark out what he’d gathered from the case instead.

A cosmonaut was likely killed for the dust he held in a non-descriptive, middle-of-nowhere space lodge. No one there wanted to talk. This death was now connected to a drug gang moving in on the western coast of the Northern Hemisphere Region and the stations under such northern-western jurisdiction, buying out legitimate businesses and using them as fronts to sell this new drug they were manufacturing. Several companies were also involved in this witch’s brew. And then there were possibly other dark entities after knowledge Alphonso had possessed, who were also seeking his death.

What knowledge was that? What did he know or find out on his travels? And how were those outside of the Society able to steal and use dust on an level, whatsoever?

From his cursory knowledge, dust was used for many things and was meant to ennoble a user, expand the mind and body and in turn, that user would spread knowledge to humanity. But in the wrong hands it was spreading like a plague and where ever it touched, death followed. This thought lead to a dark spiral that was difficult for him to get out of. He silently repeated the mantra of serenity and calm and focused on the case. The kettle whistled. He fixed his tea. His spices were stale and old but they still worked. No honey, no cream. He just sipped it straight. The com-link pinged. He answered it.

“This is Jonas Johnson.”

“Yes, Mr. Johnson. I called yesterday. I’d like to talk to you. My name is Jessie. It’s about the case you’re working on. I have some information you might need.”

“What case?”

“The case brought to you by Cassandra Ferreira.” Jonas was silent, trying to figure out who in the rotting hell this was. Then:

“Who are you?”

“I’m one of the brethren.
