Chapter Nine

Jerry stepped into the hallway, expecting to see Carter standing in his usual spot. He wasn’t there. He double-checked to ensure the door was locked and made his way to the lobby with Gunter at his side. He sat in an overstuffed chair in the corner and texted Fred. > We need to talk. Jerry hit send as Gunter sat in a crouched position at his feet, ears alert. The phone rang. He swiped to answer and placed the phone to his ear. “I’m assuming Carter filled you in,” Jerry said, forgoing the formalities.

“He gave me his version,” Fred replied.

“There’s only one version. I freaked out and nearly suffocated April in the process,” Jerry sighed. “Looks like I really screwed up on this one. You might as well send everyone home.”

“You’re telling me you’ve been there all day, and you haven’t seen one ghost that needs your attention.”

“I might have had a run-in from a spirit of Christmas past, but what does that have to do with anything?”

“Because dealing with spirits is your job. Listen, McNeal, your ego may be bruised at the moment, but I’ve never known you to ask for help where it wasn’t warranted.”

Jerry wanted to agree with the man, but he didn’t feel very agreeable at the moment. “There’s a first time for everything.”

“Be that as it may, my agents are already in place, and I prefer to keep them there for the time being. What’s on your agenda for tomorrow?”

“April wants to go to an estate auction.”

“I thought you like to shop. Why don’t you sound happy about that?” Fred asked.

“I am, but Max doesn’t want to go. She thinks that since Susie is coming, we should let them hang out at the pool and waterslide.”

“Again, I don’t see the problem,” Fred said. “It’s still cold in both Michigan and Maine. I’ve seen pictures of the inside of your hotel. I’d think hanging out by the pool would be a welcomed retreat.”

“I’m pretty sure I’m just out of sorts, but as soon as she said she wanted to stay, I got a hit. At the same time, if she were to stay here with Susie, I would only need to keep an eye on April.”

“The fact you are still getting hits lets me know I’m right in keeping my guys in play. Listen, if the girl wants to swim, let her swim. Susie will see that she’s safe, and just to be sure, I’ll put a second set of eyes on them.”

At the mention of a second set of eyes, Jerry felt his shoulders relax. “I wouldn’t say no to that.”

“Good, consider it done. And, McNeal, don’t beat yourself up about that incident in town. Carter said if he’d been in your position, he would have reacted the same way.”

Only Carter hadn’t reacted that way. While Jerry had been gripped with a PTSD episode, Carter had remained clearheaded enough to pull him off of April before he’d suffocated her and somehow managed to do it without being seen.
