Chapter Nine
Jerry stepped into the hallway, expecting to see Carter standing in his usual spot. He wasnât there. He double-checked to ensure the door was locked and made his way to the lobby with Gunter at his side. He sat in an overstuffed chair in the corner and texted Fred. > We need to talk. Jerry hit send as Gunter sat in a crouched position at his feet, ears alert. The phone rang. He swiped to answer and placed the phone to his ear. âIâm assuming Carter filled you in,â Jerry said, forgoing the formalities.
âHe gave me his version,â Fred replied.
âThereâs only one version. I freaked out and nearly suffocated April in the process,â Jerry sighed. âLooks like I really screwed up on this one. You might as well send everyone home.â
âYouâre telling me youâve been there all day, and you havenât seen one ghost that needs your attention.â
âI might have had a run-in from a spirit of Christmas past, but what does that have to do with anything?â
âBecause dealing with spirits is your job. Listen, McNeal, your ego may be bruised at the moment, but Iâve never known you to ask for help where it wasnât warranted.â
Jerry wanted to agree with the man, but he didnât feel very agreeable at the moment. âThereâs a first time for everything.â
âBe that as it may, my agents are already in place, and I prefer to keep them there for the time being. Whatâs on your agenda for tomorrow?â
âApril wants to go to an estate auction.â
âI thought you like to shop. Why donât you sound happy about that?â Fred asked.
âI am, but Max doesnât want to go. She thinks that since Susie is coming, we should let them hang out at the pool and waterslide.â
âAgain, I donât see the problem,â Fred said. âItâs still cold in both Michigan and Maine. Iâve seen pictures of the inside of your hotel. Iâd think hanging out by the pool would be a welcomed retreat.â
âIâm pretty sure Iâm just out of sorts, but as soon as she said she wanted to stay, I got a hit. At the same time, if she were to stay here with Susie, I would only need to keep an eye on April.â
âThe fact you are still getting hits lets me know Iâm right in keeping my guys in play. Listen, if the girl wants to swim, let her swim. Susie will see that sheâs safe, and just to be sure, Iâll put a second set of eyes on them.â
At the mention of a second set of eyes, Jerry felt his shoulders relax. âI wouldnât say no to that.â
âGood, consider it done. And, McNeal, donât beat yourself up about that incident in town. Carter said if heâd been in your position, he would have reacted the same way.â
Only Carter hadnât reacted that way. While Jerry had been gripped with a PTSD episode, Carter had remained clearheaded enough to pull him off of April before heâd suffocated her and somehow managed to do it without being seen.
