As we ran back into school, I could feel my heart pounding. Please, please, let me be something, I wished inside my head. Even if it meant being an Ugly Sister, I was dying to have some part or other. Maybe it was horrible of me to feel glad about it, but I was relieved that at least I knew Fliss wouldn’t be Cinderella. That was one less person in the running for it, anyway – and she would have been totally unbearable if she HAD got the part, more to the point!

There was quite a crowd around the noticeboard in the school hall. We pushed our way forward, trying to spot our names on the printed piece of paper. I looked desperately for mine next to the part of Cinderella, but then my shoulders slumped as I read the name. Lisa Warren. Well, she HAD been good – better than me, anyway. Still, it didn’t make me feel any less disappointed.

“Yes!! Wicked Wilma – Frankie Thomas!” Frankie read aloud, punching the air and whooping. “RESULT!! Excellent, fantastic, I’m in the pantomime!”

Kenny had pushed her way right to the front. “So am I!” she yelled excitedly. “I’m down to play Grizzle! COOL!! I’m an Ug!”

I chuckled as I saw who was playing Moana. “Have you seen who they cast you with?” I asked, pointing at the name. “Look!”

Kenny read the paper eagerly, and then her face fell. “I don’t believe it! Emma Hughes! Great – me and my bezzy mate, I don’t think!” Then she paused. “Hey, actually, that’s really funny, because she didn’t even audition for that, did she? She auditioned for Cinderella! Ha ha!! She’s going to be so mad when she sees that!”

Kenny scoured the hall for Emma. Ahh, there she was, rushing forward expectantly to see if she’d been given a part. Had she ever!

“Yoo-hoo!” Kenny yelled, waving madly at her. “Emma! You and me, mate! We’re the Uglies!”

“Ha ha, very funny,” Emma sneered, turning away from her and going up to the noticeboard.

“Oh dear, look at that, she doesn’t even believe me!” Kenny sniggered. “Get used to the idea – it’s me and you as the Ugly Twins!”

Emma clapped a hand over her mouth and looked really upset as she saw the truth for herself. For a moment, I actually felt sorry for her. Talk about a public humiliation!

I sighed, still feeling disappointed that I hadn’t been picked. But there were only a handful of main parts after all, and maybe I could be in the chorus or something…

Then Lyndz was tugging my sleeve. “Hey, look, Rosie, here’s your name!” she shouted. “You’re Buttons!”

Buttons! I had a part! I stared at the cast list, unable to believe it was true. But there, in black and white, it said, “Buttons – Rosie Cartwright.” So it WAS true!

“Yes!!” I screamed, jumping up and down in excitement. “I got a part!” I was SOOOO happy, I can’t tell you! So I hadn’t been picked for Cinderella, big deal!
