CHAPTER ELEVEN
GUNTER
I was trying not to be nervous, but I wasnât having much luck. It was a good nervous, though. It wasnât dread and a sinking-feeling kind of nervous. It was excitement and anticipation.
It wasnât the fact I was driving to Clayâs place, that I was about to see my kitchen countertop before it was installed tomorrow. And it wasnât that I was meeting his dad again, this time with him knowing Clay and I had a thing going. And I wasnât afraid of meeting the other men that worked there. In particular, Rusty, who Clay was friends with but still hadnât found the right time to tell him about who he was dating.
Iâd told Clay there was no rush to tell anyone, and in the grand scheme of things, it had only been a few days since heâd told his dad.
What I was most nervous about?
Jayden and Cass would be gone until late, meaning when Clay came around for dinner, weâd have the whole place to ourselves, and if the lack of furniture at my house was any reason to not get to second or third base, then we had absolutely no excuses now.
Iâd even visited the drugstore for supplies.
Confident and presumptuous, maybe. But better than being caught without.
And Iâd be lying to myself if I said I wasnât excited about it.
The way heâd kissed me up until now was out of this world. Hell, even if he did nothing but kiss me ever again, I wouldnât complain.
But the idea of physical intimacy? After so long without it? Well, my body was on board with the idea, that was for sure.
But first the countertop. Equally exciting, just in a different way.
I pulled my car into a spot by the other vehicles and got out. Clay knew I was coming, and I wasnât sure exactly where to go, given it was business hours and this was a working lumberyard, and the whole place was huge. There were many sheds, many rows of logs.
I guessed itâd be the main shed where Clay had taken me before, but I didnât want to walk through the big open doors because that was a work area, and I could hear a motor running and the buzz-and-whirr sound of lumber being sawn in there. And off to the right, there was a man on a tractor with a huge claw-like thing carrying a huge log, and it looked like someone else was feeding a wood chipper out back.
A door opened at the side and Clay appeared, and his smile made my heart skip a beat.
I had to remind myself that this was his workplace and he wasnât out to his coworkers, so me launching myself at him was out of the question.
âHey,â he said.
I tried to rein in my smile. âAfternoon.â
âCome this way,â he said, ushering me into an office. It was all wood paneling with desks and planners on the wall, and it smelled of sawdust and diesel, which was fast becoming my new favorite smell.
