CHAPTER 17

ROAD PIZZA

Hanable’s Valley, NY

MEREDETH HEARD KEVIN get up, heard the subtle rattle of his phone on the nightstand as he picked it up, heard the door to the bathroom close with a slight click, then turned her head toward the other side of the room and tried to go back to sleep. She had no idea what the time was but was intimately familiar with the muzzy-headed-middle-of-the-night feeling she had. It was early morning, if she had her guess, probably four or half-past four. Curiosity pricked her mind. Is he getting called out to a crime scene? she wondered. She turned her head back toward the bathroom door and opened her eyes, straining to hear Kevin’s side of the call.

The door swung open, and Kevin stepped out of the bathroom’s black maw. Light from his phone screen danced across his cheek as he moved silently toward the bed. “Meredeth?” he whispered in such a low volume she almost thought it was her mind playing tricks. But Kevin didn’t get back in bed, just stood there watching her for signs of wakefulness.

“What is it, Kevin? Are you getting called out?”

“No. It’s Van Zandt. I’d let you sleep, but he has news about the road rage cases—specifically about a fresh one very close to here. He wants us to pack up and run.”

“The hell with that,” she said as she stifled a yawn. “Who’s the local contact? I want to go to the scene.”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea, Mere,” said Kevin. “Neither does Bobby.”

“How far away is it?” She swung her legs out of the bed and pulled on her shorts. “I have to empty the bag, and I should take some supplies in that little bag the ostomy supply company sent me, rather than lugging the crap around in my purse.”

“Didn’t you hear me, Mere?” asked Kevin, a note of annoyance in his voice.

“I did, but I need to go there, Kevin. This guy’s long gone. That’s in his MO.”

“Maybe, maybe not.” He removed the phone from his ear and turned on the speaker phone feature. “Bobby wants to say something direct.”

“That’s right,” said Bobby, his voice tinny. “Listen, Meredeth Connelly, you are on medical leave. Alex almost killed you, and now we have this suspicious move from the Pacific Northwest right into Kevin’s backyard.”

“That’s right,” said Kevin. “It’s just north of Browncroft, about fifteen miles from here. That guy last night might be the unsub, Mere.”

“What guy last night?” asked Bobby in a sharp, no-nonsense tone.

“Some guy in the diner who stared at me a little too much. But he apologized and left when Kevin confronted him.”

“That’s not good,” muttered Bobby. “Especially since someone was murdered at another mile marker thirty-three.”

“Come on, Bobby. Don’t jump at shadows,” said Meredeth. “The guy‍—‍”

“Gave me a case of the hinkies,” said Kevin.

“Look, you guys, my reversal surgery is in a matter of days now. I can’t go into hiding.”

“You could,” said Bobby. “You could delay the surgery.”

“No,” she said flatly.

“Be reasonable, Mere.
