LOOKING BACK I WASN’T sure how much had actually happened, and how much was the conjuring of my food-starved, shell-shocked, half-exsanguinated mind.

Without saying a word, I stared up at the man—at his impossibly bright eyes, haloed in the soft glow of the streetlamps. My first thought was that he looked like some kind of divine intercessor. A holy man sent to earth by God himself. Then I realized if that was really the case, he would probably be pretty ticked about us stealing from the offering box.

“I’m sorry.”

I didn’t know why I was apologizing, or even to whom I was directing it. Under the present circumstances, it just seemed like the right thing to do.

The man raised his eyebrows, staring down with the hint of a smile. “Are you, now.”

I wasn’t sure what was happening—who this man was, or why he’d had such a profound effect on the people standing in the road. My chest was heaving with silent breaths, and although I couldn’t feel parts of it I’m sure my body was shaking. Griffin was still being pinned down by no fewer than four men beside me. Gabrielle was still a trembling prisoner by his side.

“William,” the old man spoke sharply, turning that piercing gaze to the man keeping her captive, “I can’t believe you would possibly be holding that young woman against her will.”

The man released her at once, stumbling into the crowd with mumbled apologies. She cast a wild look around her, took a step towards me, then froze. Too shaken to move.

“And you,” he continued, those eyes falling on the men holding Griffin, freezing each one in place, “I happen to know you were all raised a good deal better than this. Four on one? Really? He’s just a kid.”

They vanished as well, melting seamlessly into the horde of people that had poured out of the bar and onto the street. The police were still on their way, but at this point their presence was hardly necessary. A collective hush had fallen over every one of them. When the old man glanced in their direction, they scattered into the wind.

That left just one. A man still desperately determined to beat me to death.

“Liam.”

“It isn’t what you think!” Liam exclaimed, pointing down at me while stammering like a misbehaving child. “He deserves every bit! The guy threw me into a—”

“What are you saying?” the old man interrupted, pointing to me as well. “This kid can’t be more than sixteen years old. You’re saying he was able to get the drop on you?”

There were few motivators more powerful than male pride. Especially when the man in question had built his entire reputation on being the biggest, strongest, toughest man in town.

He froze for a second, looking as though the effort was literally tearing him in half, then took a deliberate step back. Scoffing all the while. “Of course not. Don’t be absurd.”

“I make it a point not to be.” The old man folded his arms across his chest, eyes twinkling with what might have been the hint of a smile.
