Chapter 12

Melody’s alarm clock went off at 8:00 as planned, and she awoke fully refreshed, energized, and ready to tackle the full day. A glance out the window showed the weather forecast had been correct and there was only a light dusting of snow on the ground, nothing to be alarmed about. She smiled to herself as she made her way to the bathroom to take a shower and get ready for church. “Who was I to ever doubt you, meteorologist John Stone?” she muttered, turning the water on to warm up as she brushed her teeth.

A little over half an hour later, she was dressed, makeup on, hair done, and ready to grab her phone and head downstairs for some breakfast before heading off to church. She’d decided to go with black slacks and a plum sweater since it was so cold outside. She’d have time to come home and change into a dress before the rehearsal, which she thought seemed more appropriate since she’d be wearing a dress tomorrow, no matter the weather, but for now, teaching Sunday school to a bunch of little ones, it seemed more fitting to put on pants.

She grabbed her phone off the nightstand and noticed she had several missed calls from Reid but only one voicemail. She thought it was odd he’d called so many times, so she took a seat on the edge of the bed and tried to call him back before she even listened to the message, but it went straight to his voicemail.

“Melody! Breakfast is ready! I made your favorite—waffles!” Sarah’s voice rang up the stairs.

“Okay, Mom! I’m coming.” Torn between listening to Reid’s message and satisfying the grumbling in her stomach, Melody hesitated. He probably just wanted to let her know they were on their way. Still, she decided to go ahead and listen to the message before she headed downstairs.

It was quick and didn’t tell her much. “Hi, honey. I’ve been trying to reach you. Give me a call when you get a chance.”

That was it. Melody thought it was odd, but since she’d tried to reach him and couldn’t, she wasn’t sure what else to do. She dialed him one more time as she headed toward the stairs. Once again, he didn’t answer, and knowing he would see her missed calls and call her back, she didn’t leave a message. She slipped her phone into her pocket and followed her nose to the kitchen.

Her mother wasn’t kidding. A heaping stack of waffles threatened to teeter off of Melody’s plate, warm maple syrup dripping down the sides. “Goodness, Mom. You expect me to eat all of this? There has to be at least six waffles here.”

“Well, I just wanted to make sure you had a good breakfast. I wasn’t sure how much time you’d have for lunch, and if your rehearsal dinner is anything like mine, there won’t be a whole lot of time for eating then, either. You’ll be too busy talking to your friends.”
