Audiences loved these Disney cartoons in color, and by 1935 Mickey Mouse was colorized too. Things were going great for Walt at the studio. Back at home things were very happy as well.

On December 18, 1933, Walt was at an award ceremony in Hollywood. About halfway through the ceremony he was notified that there was a family emergency and he must leave. Walt rushed out of the building and went to the hospital as fast as he could. Lillian was about to give birth to a baby girl, Diane Marie. Three years later, the Disney’s adopted another daughter, Sharon Mae.

It seemed like everything had perfectly come together for Walt and Roy. They both had happy families, the studio was successful, and Mickey Mouse was delighting audiences in both sound and color. In addition, the studio had just perfected a new camera called the “multiplane.”

With this new camera, the studio could create cartoons with different depths and dimensions. The multiplane camera split the field of view—the area visible through a camera’s lens—into different planes or levels.
