Every day we breathe in mental toxins, stress, sadness, and violence around us. The intrusion of shadow into our light is constant. This process of taking in the bad news of the world is only getting more and more severe. For example, our movies are increasingly violent, news programs include fewer positive stories, and all this negative information comes at us faster than ever. The emotions around us are contagious. We live in a stressful environment with little time to ourselves, so we breathe stress. The more we breathe this negative energy, the more stressed we become. There is no end.
We can’t change reality, but we can change our perception of it by recycling it. We can transform the shadows around us into light. We can recycle ignorance into intelligence, stupidity into compassion, and sadness into happiness. We can change our experience of life by changing our perception of it.
I will teach this change through the practice of meditating like a wave, using the tonglen, a Tibetan term that I translate roughly as “recycling.” (I explain this concept in depth at the back of the book, beginning on this page.) Practice the wave and you can change your life. Not after one year of practicing, but immediately—after the first time.
The first time I presented this practice to my parolee friends at the Amity Foundation in Los Angeles, it made an impact. Many of my students there have chronic addictions, have taken antidepressants for long periods of time, and fight through a multitude of mental health issues after years spent incarcerated. The moment they practiced the wave, they felt better. Their success made me cry. We all saw how simple it was to feel better immediately. We saw how the world could be better right now if we practice the wave and learn to recycle the shadow into light.
It is the same process for a workplace. What is the goal of a company? To develop more stability, prosperity, and profit. What does a company need to avoid? Bad energy, tension, and overly fatigued employees. A company must create a positive energy and a positive collective mind. Positive ambiance in the workplace fosters happy employees who are creative and intuitive. This is especially true in our competitive global market; products and services can be provided from any part of the world. As all emotions are contagious, more employers need to make the decision to bring positive energy to their workplace, allowing their employees to be inspired, driven, and, most importantly, happy.
What do we need to develop positive energy? No judgment from our coworkers, no negative emotions, no mental toxins. Why is it that so often our work is filled with these destructive attitudes? Because we have never learned the most important teaching about the workplace, to be positive, kind, and altruistic. Some people say that stress, sadness, and anxiety are normal. But we see how those emotions create a bad mood for all who surround us.
