As we go deeper into meditation, you’ll find this verbal-cue process of using the focus phrases Robert is teaching to be invaluable in your progress. Rather than your mind trying to remember everything you’re supposed to do in the meditation flow, all you need to do is memorize the short focus phrases, and each time you pause to meditate, these verbal cues will guide you through the ever-deepening experience of looking within.
We’ll be learning seven focus phrases in all, and these key statements will be all you need, after a couple weeks of practice, to master this meditation program. So rather than thinking you’re going to have to memorize everything in this book, you can just relax, enjoy the read, and rest assured that by the time you’ve finished reading the book, you’ll know by heart the seven focus phrases that point you inward. You’ll know how to open up to the infinity of experience that lies directly within and beyond.
For now, let’s settle a bit deeper into the first two focus phrases. They’re very simple and straightforward. You don’t have to ruminate upon them; you simply do what you’re telling yourself to do. You take positive charge of your mind and aim your all-powerful focus of attention right to the heart of your true being.
You already know the first two focus phrases by heart because they summarize what Lisa has been teaching her friends thus far. What’s new and powerful is the actual act of saying them to yourself. You’re learning by heart the superstructure of meditation, the formula for success. As Robert pointed out, you’re giving the part of yourself that usually interrupts your meditations something helpful to do during meditation, and this activity will mostly satisfy and occupy the chatter center of your brain.
Our thinking minds are genetically programmed to protect us by anticipating bad things that might happen in the future and making plans and actions that will enable us to avoid those bad things. This is all fine and good when kept in its place. The human dilemma is that this fear-based function of the mind seems to have taken over, and meditation is the process whereby we calmly insist on spending only a certain amount of our day thinking and problem solving. All the rest of the day we can spend enjoying ourselves and awakening our deeper potential, here in this eternal present moment.
