5.3.4 Summary
Adrenergic agonists include epinephrine, dipivalyl epinephrine, and clonidine, which are of historical significance, and the selective α2-agonists include apraclonidine and brimonidine, which are still in widespread clinical use today. Brimonidine remains an important tool in IOP reduction, generally as an adjunctive therapy rather than first-line treatment. Apraclonidine is used for short-term pressure control peri-operatively or after laser procedures. The use of both brimonidine and apraclonidine is limited by a high rate of ocular side effects, and they are absolutely contraindicated in children due to serious systemic side effects.
