The day Olivia had anxiously awaited finally came, and her nerves were at breaking point. Whatever comments Amanda had about her play she kept to herself that day. Ethan was usually the one who could calm Olivia on performance days, but Amanda was all Olivia had this time, and she wasn’t about to screw that chance to get closer to her girl.

With that in mind, instead of the “you’ll do great, I’m sure, my love” text she initially typed, Amanda sent her a simple “break a leg,” followed by a leg and an explosion emoji. Olivia always told her she didn’t know how to properly use emojis, so maybe that would get a smile out of the nervous teenager waiting in the backstage.

When the curtains finally opened, Amanda, Dani, and Liam had their eyes glued to the stage. Amanda knew Olivia would only make her appearance in the third act, but she had to pay extra attention if she hoped to understand any Portuguese. Patrick narrated as the young actors depicted Brazilian composer Chiquinha Gongaza’s life story to the audience.

Amanda’s wide eyes behind glasses tried to make sense of the words she heard. She gathered that the play focused on the trajectory of a black woman in the nineteenth century who defied society to be a musician.

The second act finished with an excited Amanda eager to see Olivia shine. When the curtains opened, there she was. Olivia’s scene was powerful, the orchestra instruments reached high notes as reddish lights indicated a family dispute. Amanda didn’t understand all of it, but her heart was filled to the brim with admiration for Olivia.

Patrick reentered the stage to tell the audience how Chiquinha Gonzaga managed to overcome a misogynistic society and become the first woman conductor in Brazil. The lead actress played the piano and many spectators seemed to recognize the tune, which reminded Amanda of samba.

The show ended in a standing ovation. Proud parents and peers shared the emotional look on Amanda’s face.
