Chapter twenty-one

Claudia sat in her car in the police department parking lot feeling ill. She gripped the steering wheel to stop her hands from shaking.

Why would anyone want to kill Josh Dickson?

She phoned Rachel Thomas from the road and asked for a meeting. Judging by her unwelcoming manner when Claudia identified herself, she guessed that her classmate would not have answered the call had she recognized the phone number.

“I can’t take a break,” Rachel grumbled when she heard the reason for the meeting—that Claudia wanted to get her comments about Lucy Valentine for the documentary. “I already told Matt Macedo I’m on my own this week. What’s so urgent?”

“Mainly that I’m in town and was hoping to talk to you while I’m here. It’s easier to talk in person.”

“Easier for who?” Rachel heaved an aggrieved sighed. “You’d have to come to the mortuary and talk while I work.”

“I can do that. And I promise not to take a lot of your time. I want to get on the freeway before it gets late.”

Grudgingly, she agreed to meet if Claudia could be there in thirty minutes. Claudia could. “You’d better not be queasy about seeing dead bodies” Rachel added.

Thinking about Josh Dickson, and some other corpses she wished she had not seen, Claudia made a face at herself in the rearview mirror. “Guess we’ll find out.”
