CHAPTER SEVEN

Magoon rubbed his hands together. “Looks like this could be exciting.”

“I can do without being shot at; even when I’m expecting it.”

“Right now, I’d love it, Sir.”

Gunn laughed as he poured more drinks. “I suppose so. Life must be pretty dull after the Regiment.”

“Oh, I don’t know. I get to shred secret papers once in a while, and turn away door to door salesmen.”

“But not what you’re used to. Well, I think I can safely say this lot will get your adrenaline pumping again. Vileman tell you anything about the people we’re up against?”

Magoon shook his head. “Didn’t see him. The Chief of Staff told me to get out here and report to you.”

“Then you’ll know nothing about Wanda Liszt, and what I think she’s up to.”

“All I know about that woman,” Magoon replied, with a sour look, “is office gossip. But I gather she’s a bit of no good.”

Gunn hooked a long leg over the arm of his chair and settled back. “Wanda Liszt and before her, her father Otto have by and large caused me more trouble than any poor, hard working agent has a right to expect in pursuit of his lawful duties.”

Magoon smiled at the word, lawful, but said nothing. Gunn went on. “To put it mildly, she’s a pain in the butt. And in case you’re imagining some witch-like crone, let me correct you. She’s in her late twenties and one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen. She’s smart, ambitious, ruthless and totally amoral; and I don’t think she’s had one decent thought - especially about me - since she stopped wearing waterproof pants. And yet . . .”

“Yet what?” Magoon pounced on the tinge of doubt.

Gunn shook his head. “Forget it, Sergeant.”

Magoon shrugged. “Sounds a right little sweetheart.”

“She’s that all right,' Gunn replied. “And the people she surrounds herself with are out of the same stable; though none quite match her genius.”

“You said she has a plan, Sir.”

Gunn nodded. “Wanda’s always got a plan. But this time I think it’s so damned big in scope it’s staggering.” He paused to take a drink. “The trouble is most of what I’m working with is supposition based on some fairly hairy evidence. I do know one thing though. She’s got to be stopped before she so much as sets the first cog in motion, because after that I’ve got a terrible feeling it’ll be too late.”

Magoon said nothing. There was nothing to say, yet. He waited patiently, swirling the drink in his hand. Ice cubes tinkling musically while Gunn gathered his thoughts. Magoon had thoughts too, but couldn’t have put them into words. Gunn’s hesitant “and yet” seemed to hold a depth of hidden meaning; he was sure of that. The man's antipathy toward Wanda Liszt was obvious. He wanted her destroyed. But why that small qualification when he'd spoken of her black character? A love-hate relationship? Magoon put the idea firmly aside. You could read too much into a couple of casual words.
