Right away, Mom and Dad said we needed to get Tanya and Alex and their parents involved. They said everybody needed to know what was happening because nobody was going to allow a fifteen-year-old bully to ruin our lives.

Then they said the time had come to stop ignoring the fact that Dmitry lives in that home and is in need of help. They said it was time we all worked together to figure out a way to help him.

“Sergei Smirnov be damned!” Mom said. “That little boy needs our help, and for the love of God, it’s time we gave it to him!”

Mom cussed? I’ve never heard Mom cuss before. Holy mackerel, what a night!

“Max, I’m proud of you for wanting to help Dmitry,” she said. “There is nothing so important in this world as kindness, and sometimes it takes courage to be kind. You’ve been brave, and we’re proud of that.”

Wow. Mom never says stuff like that to me.

She continued, “We can approach this so that Tolik will never know you told us about seeing him with Dmitry. That never even has to be mentioned.”

Why didn’t I think of that?

Sure, we can find a way to help Dmitry without bringing up that day at the window!

So anyway, after that, we talked a little more, and Mom said she’d call the other moms and arrange a meeting.

I’m telling you, Diary… I feel like a million kilos have been lifted off my shoulders. I feel so free and weightless — I swear I could fly.

Now I can’t wait to go to sleep, so I can get up and see Alex and Tanya tomorrow and finally tell them what’s been going on. I think it will all be okay. It feels like it will be, anyway.

Oh, funny! Charley just rolled over on his back and put all four legs straight up in the air. Then, when he was sure I was looking at him, he stuck his tongue out the side of his mouth. Either he wants a treat or he wants to go outside. Or maybe he just wants to hear me laugh.

He’s such a goof!
