4 = 4 / + 6

10 = 10

Still a true statement. So clearly, adding a number to both sides does not change an equation's truth value. Obviously the same is true when subtracting a number from both sides:

4 = 4 / - 6

-2 = -2

We may also multiply both sides by a number:

4 = 4 / ยท 3

12 = 12

Or divide the equation:

4 = 4 / : 2

2 = 2

In summary, given a certain equation, we can modify it as we please using the following operations without changing its truth value: add a number, subtract a number, multiply by a number and divide by a number (except zero - never divide anything by zero). Naturally this operation must be performed on both sides or we will end up changing the truth value of it. Ignoring this very basic idea is, in my experience, the number one source for frustration when working with equations.
