I sat in the car, wringing my hands and biting my nails to the entire drive to Harrisburg. Virgil took me right to the hospital door, and I ran to the front desk to ask where Luke’s room was. When I got upstairs, several family members, including his parents, Lawrence and Tammy, his brother Grant and Trista, were in the waiting area.

Luke was in ICU, and when I came off the elevator, his sister ran to me, and we hugged. She introduced me to her parents, and we held hands while we waited to hear news about Luke. Even though I wasn’t family, the Barringtons treated me as such, leading me to believe that Luke had told them about us. His mother held my hands in hers, and his father patted my shoulder.

“Any news?” I asked tearfully.

“The doctor has briefed us on his condition.”

“He has some head trauma, causing the coma, a broken back, leg, and arm. The next twenty-four hours are crucial.”

Poor Luke. I started to think of what life would be like without him. I sat down in the corner of the waiting room and wiped at my tears. Trista handed me some tissues and put her arm around my shoulder.

“Don’t worry. Luke’s going to be okay. He has everything to live for.”

“What the hell was he doing up on the roof?”

“The foreman told us that he was checking on the work they were doing up there. He tripped, and before anyone could grab him, he fell. They said he hit the patio below, but his head hit the grassy area. It saved him from more severe head trauma. The doctor said it’s a waiting game to see when he will wake up.”

“I love him. He can’t die,” I whispered.

“My boy isn’t going to die. He’s strong and healthy. Don’t worry,” Tammy said. She sat down next to me to give me comfort. I knew I should be giving her comfort since she was his mother, and I couldn’t imagine how she felt that one of her children was in great peril.

Throughout the day, we were given status updates on Luke, and we took turns visiting him. When it was my turn, I almost cried out when I saw all the tubes, casts, and bruises on him. He looked horrible.

“Talk to him,” the nurse said. “He can hear you.”

“Luke, it’s Bella. I love you. Please, I can’t live without you. I want us to be together. I was going to tell you, but you got hurt.”

I gently stroked his hair, hoping that he would moan or open his eyes, but I got nothing from him. They let me stay with him for a half-hour until the doctor came in to check on him. I went out to sit in the waiting room with the Barringtons.

“Bella, do you need us to book you a room at the hotel?” Lawrence asked.

“Uh, no, thank you. My parents live close to here. I’ll stay with them.”

“Virgil will take you to your house then.
