OTHER RADIO NAVIGATION AIDS

As recently as 10 years ago, there would have been a long section here about radio navigation aids, like Decca and even possibly Loran-C, not to mention radio direction-finding. These systems have all been superseded by GPS. They are no longer a part of the RYA navigation syllabus.

The Varne Light Buoy in Dover Strait carries a radar transponder

52 ARPA – Automatic Radar Plotting Aid; AIS – Automatic Identification System. Both systems provide information on course, speed and CPA for other contacts in your vicinity. ARPA information is derived from your radar, and AIS from the GPS information in other ships, broadcast on VHF (see p109).
