SELECTING A JOB

Money vs. Happiness

Throughout your life, there are essentially two strong factors that determine whether or not you continue with the same job. However, sometimes one will outweigh the other, thus making the other no longer noteworthy. These two factors are money and happiness.

When offered a job, this is where you want to say “SHOW ME THE MONEY!” The single most important piece of information to you is how much money you will be earning so that you can actually live and thrive like any other person in this penny-pinching country. Ask yourself, though: “Would I rather earn more money or be happier at my workplace?” Your answer may be different depending on where you are in life. For example, if you have just graduated grad school, have thousands of dollars in student loans to pay off, and your wife has your third kid on the way, then the money might seem like an absolute must!

Money trumps all. This is how society has cultured us to think. If we see a dollar bill on the ground, we pick it up. A dollar bill feels good to hold in your hand and even better when it has Benjamin Franklin on the front. Money represents the freedom to buy whatever you want whenever you want it.

Or just by saving up money, it represents security. A millionaire is more likely to invest in a risky stock than a middle-class man or woman. The millionaire can lose some money and still be okay.

So, going back to our original question: “More money or more happiness?” Well, to make this more cut and dry, we are going to define “happiness at your workplace.”

Ask yourself these questions about your job. (If you do not currently have a job, great! You are a clean slate and we want to help pick the perfect one.)

Are you excited to go to work every day?

Do you enjoy whom you work with?

Are you friends with your co-workers?

Is the weekend always the best part of your week?

Do you respect and listen to your boss/executive?
