I put the lid back on the worm house, grab my journal, and skip down the hall to my classroom. Now that those worms are all settled and working, I’m going to have the coolest project.

Today, everybody can put in their peas and their crusts.

I cannot wait for lunch. Those worms are going to have the best feast ever.

When I get back to the classroom, Veronica Grace is lugging a watering can from the sink to her desk. Annie is up on a chair, holding one end of an old garden hose. Jimmy Lawson is on a chair a few feet away holding the other end. Alex and Rupert are duct-taping the middle of the hose to the top of a rusty aluminum lawn chair. Rasheena has some kind of buzzer going off in the corner. And Kimmy Butler is over in the reading area, hula-hooping.

“Don’t break that!” Alex yells at her from under the garden hose. “We need it for our top-secret, classified recycling project.”

Mrs. Aloi is standing in the doorway, watching. She doesn’t even try to quiet everybody down.

“Have you lost your maracas?” I ask her.

She shakes her head. “No, just my mind.”
