Chapter Thirteen
Tomorrowâs November fifteenth, which means the winter parking ban is in effect until April fifteenth. No vehicles can be parked on the road between the hours of 11 pm and 6 am, and violators may be towed. Chief Bordeaux would like to add the following statement: âItâs not up to residents who watch the weather forecast and decide itâs not going to snow. Itâs every night. Period. Come on, people. We do this every single year.â

A few days later Chelsea pulled into Ellen Suttonâs driveway and parked behind Mollyâs car. Since it was her party, she probably wouldnât be leaving any time soon.
After getting out of her car, she took a moment to appreciate the big Queen Anne home that was an inn before David and Ellen Sutton bought it. Sheâd always loved this property, and thought it was the prettiest house in town. The inn had often hosted weddings and events, so there was a large gazebo in the backyard that overlooked the river. And several years ago the family had done a beautiful job of converting the carriage house into Suttonâs Place Brewery & Tavern. Having enough land to put the parking for the taproom on the far side of the carriage house, so it was accessed by the other road and not Ellenâs driveway, had definitely helped.
She grabbed the gift bag off the passenger seat and Evie met her at the door. âWelcome! Weâre just waiting for Irish and the boys to sneak out the back door with Leeza and then weâll get started. Jack and Eli are dragging their feet because thereâs a lot of food in the kitchen.â
Chelsea set her gift on the card table theyâd set by the door and then greeted everybody. The Sutton women: Ellen, Gwen, Mallory, and Evie. Mollyâs mother, Amanda, of course. Laura Thompson. It was the small group Molly considered family, and she was glad to have been invited. Sure, sheâd been the maid of honor, but sheâd also been at the wedding. They could have left her off the viewing list.
âGo make yourself a plate,â Ellen told her, waving toward the kitchen. âAnd leave room for seconds and thirds because we made too much food, as always.â
She wasnât kidding. Jack and Eli, whom Irish must have finally gotten out of there, didnât need to worry. Theyâd be eating leftovers for days. Which reminded her, she wanted to make sure John remembered she wouldnât be home for dinner tonight. After setting her plate down, she pulled out her phone to text him.
Not sure if you remember I wonât be home for supper tonight because Iâm at Ellenâs for Mollyâs party.
I probably would have remembered when I sat at the kitchen table and there was no food on my plate.
There was a slight pause and then another message followed.
Kidding. I remembered, and I can forage for myself. Although, Iâve heard tales of the food at Sutton gatherings and you might be able to sneak some out for me.
