Even if these basics are in place, it is so important to appear on the first page that it is worth going the extra mile and finding some help from a web designer with SEO skills. A 2010 study by icrossing.com found that 95 per cent of all search traffic comes from search results on page one. A luxury hotel chain found that on many commonly used search strings entered by its target customers, such as ‘boutique hotel London’ in Figure 7.11, it was coming on page 2 or lower. A simple analysis of its better-performing competitors showed why they were ranked higher: they included common search terms within the page title; they repeated these search words several times on the home page; and they had customer review facilities to engage repeat customers with the site, encourage traffic and provide advocacy. Some straightforward amendments brought the site onto the first page of some key search terms.
