Chapter 5
Jamie wasnât sure how she felt right now. The man, Jon Williams, was going to prison. He was behind bars even now, awaiting his trial. Heâd been treated at the hospital for his wounds, then taken directly to the local jail to be incarcerated. She was glad heâd been caught. But as it stood right now, she had no reason whatsoever to stick around. And her boss wanted her to get back to work.
Not bothering to look when the door to the deck where she was opened and closed, Jamie knew it was Mark. Heâd been checking up on her for the last couple of hours. When he sat down in front of her on the stairs to the lower deck, there wasnât an opportunity to say anything, as he started talking immediately.
âI know that one of my brothers spoke to you about our livelihoods around here. I wanted to explain things to you more. Then Iâd like to talk to you about a few other things I have on my mind. All right?â She told him she wanted to talk to him as well. âIâm all right with that too. As you know, we come from a long line of Crosses. My too-many-greats-to-know-how-to-count moved here, when the place was nothing more than a large timber area, to build the first homestead, which is still standing at the back of the property. We can take a trip there sometime if youâd like.â
âIâd like that.â She leaned back in the chair sheâd been sitting in and looked out over the woods in front of them. âMy dad will be involved in any decision made involving me.â
He turned to stare at her but didnât say anything to her about her father. He did continue on with his tale. She worried for a moment about what that meant but decided she had a nice place back home, and he could fuck himself if he didnât like her taking care of her father.
âWhen my parents met, my mom was an insurance agent. She had been working there for a long time before that. Her parents owned it, and she knew her way around policies. Especially ones that involved her family.â Mark stretched out his legs as he continued. âWhen Mom and Dad married, they both had policies made for themselves. That made it so there wasnât going to be a single payoff, but one from each of them. In both, there were previsions for the other spouse, but the bulk of the money went to their familyâat that time, their parents. Then as we came along, they adjusted the beneficiaries to their children. The policies were for one million for each of us.â
âYour parents had a policy that paid out a million dollars for each of you?â He shook his head, smiling at her. âOh, well, I knew that had to be something I misheard. Iâm sorry.â
âYou didnât mishear, Jamie. But you need to remember that my dad also had a policy that gave us a million should he die.
