Simon locked the Jeep and turned toward the path he’d pointed out.

He turned to grin at Andre—it was an expression of kinship as they embarked on an adventure—and he felt something inside his chest expand and warm, blotting out the dark solitude that always seemed to be a part of him. They both started walking.

“I could probably follow this path blindfolded.” He turned to look at Andre. “It’s nice having company this time. Usually I come up here alone.”

They trekked up, Simon pointing out various vegetation and rock formations along the way that he found interesting. The path was steep and required concentration. They halted at about two miles and rested on a flat-faced rock.

“I’m glad you asked me along,” Andre said after he gulped down some water from one of the bottles he carried with him. “You’re right, it is peaceful up here.” He reached inside his pocket and pulled out a cigarette and a book of matches, needing a nicotine hit to help settle him.

He felt like a bundle of nerves inside him wanted attention, to be freed and experience the allure of the primal environment. His heart raced inside his chest. There were other urges there, ones he couldn’t quite acknowledge. His eyes turned to watch Simon as he took a long drag on his cigarette.

Simon nodded as he gulped from his own water bottle, then wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. He squinted and looked around.

“One of my favorite places. You doing okay with the climb? I’m used to it, but let me know if you need to rest again.”

Andre laughed. “I’m used to a lot worse than this. No problems here.”

“Right then. Let’s get going. We started out late, so I’d like to make up some time if we can.”
