Angie was having a wonderful time, much to her surprise. Tommy was a smooth dancer, and he knew all the steps. He was such a strong leader, she had no trouble keeping up with him through every style imaginable. They’d danced every dance from the foxtrot to the tango. Now it was last dance and he whirled her around the floor in a slow waltz as he hummed the tune.

Angie was glad she’d opted to wear a skirt instead of slacks. One couldn’t waltz properly in pants. And she had to admit, Tommy looked very nice in a gray tweed jacket. His only concession to the holiday was a green handkerchief in his breast pocket.

He knew how to dress and he knew how to dance. Her dad was a good dancer too, and he dressed nicely. Mom said she’d had to teach him to do both. That’s one of the reasons Angie had gone to ballroom dance classes, so she could teach her future husband. She wanted to do a proper dance at her wedding, not just sway to the music.

He’d kept her amused in between dances, too; making up outrageous stories about the couples on the floor. And true to his word, he hadn’t said one rude or vulgar thing to her.

To his surprise, Tommy was having a good time too. He’d started this to keep Betty away from Brian but also, he had to admit to himself, to prove something to Angie. She was so prim-and-proper with her shamrock cookies perfectly arranged on a lace doily, and the way she danced! Precise steps right out of Arthur Murray. He’d let her get away with it this time, but by God, he would take her dancing again and break her right out of that stuffy old mold she’d put herself in.

The music stopped, and Tommy spun her around once more, making her laugh. She did have a sweet laugh, but he looked forward to getting a deep, belly-laugh out of her.

Tommy took her arm and escorted her back to the table. Then he held her jacket for her and waited for her to fluff her short cap of dark curls (something she did often) and take out her compact to check her face (something she did even more often). It was trying his patience, but he wasn’t about to let her know that.

“You look just as nice now as you did when you walked into O’Malley’s tonight,” he declared. He just didn’t think she had to primp so much.

“Thank you, Tommy. It’s the first genuine compliment you’ve given me.”

“Well, it’s true.”

“I’m afraid I wasn’t in a very good mood earlier. I was so afraid Betty would hurt Brian.” Angie snapped her purse shut and slung it over her shoulder. “She doesn’t mean to do it, you know.”

Tommy took her elbow to steer her out the door. “She seems like a very unhappy person to me.”

Angie was startled. “You see it?”

“Anyone with half a brain could see it. The thing is that I’ll bet guys are always thinking she needs them to lean on.
