WHAT DO YOU REALLY WANT?

In my book Healing Mantras, I describe the efforts of two different women to attract a suitable man. They each independently undertook chanting a mantra designed to bring a spiritually based relationship with a man into a woman’s life, and each chanted this mantra for a little more than two weeks. Both then decided to stop the practice.

The first woman told me that she had decided to stop because she had only attracted “bozos.” I questioned whether she desired a truly meaningful relationship, because any results after only fourteen days of a forty-day discipline, even if they are not the ones we ultimately desire, should have been encouraging. Even so, she decided to give up her mantra practice.

The second woman also decided that she wanted a spiritual man for a life partner. She chanted the mantra for a couple of weeks, and then stopped, without really knowing why. Six months went by, and then she decided to give her mantra practice another try. Again, she lasted about two weeks and then stopped. Another several months went by, and then one morning she was struck with the question, “Did I really want to find a good man with whom a solid relationship was possible, or didn’t I?” She sat down and examined her motives and her desires, and tried to get at her innermost thoughts and feelings on the matter. She decided that she really did want such a relationship, so she began the discipline again with the combined powers of her heart, mind, and focus. This time, she completed the forty-day mantra discipline and called to tell me that within five days of its completion, she met her soul mate while riding the bus.

There is an obvious lesson here for all of us: before we decide that any practice in our life is failing to bring us the result we want, we should first examine very deeply if what we think we want is what we really want with all our heart and soul. This process of self-inquiry can be as enriching as any mantra discipline, and it is necessary for anything in our lives—including our meditation practice—to be truly successful.
