HEIGHT COMPARISON

The younger teen boy and girl are almost the same height. But the older teen boy is considerably taller than both of them. Girls always go for the taller, older character over the younger guy. They prefer the mature look to the cute, boyish look. Sorry, Shorty. (We’ll get to those older teen boys on this page.)

Ballplayer

Young teens are often portrayed as sports enthusiasts. Sports competition on the field or on the court is a natural setting for dramatics. Readers get to root for their favorite player. Girl characters cheer from the sidelines and bleachers. Injuries must be ministered to—by wannabe girlfriends. And a connection is often made that way.

A boy who cannot seem to muster what it takes to win can often dig down deep if he’s doing it “for his girl.” Grudges play out, and one-upmanship also occurs during the heat of battle. Two guys vie for the attention of a single girl when dueling for a run, a goal, or a point. So a lot of good story elements come into play around the theme of sports.

Here, we have a character who’s practicing with his team. How can we tell it’s practice? By his clothing. He wears a hooded shirt under his jersey and regular pants, not a complete uniform. It’s a good look that shows he’s on a school league, even if it’s not game day.
