together with a quotation from philosopher, Bertrand Russell, part of which read that: ‘Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty …’.
The losses at sea sustained by the Axis Powers in the Mediterranean were severe that autumn, with nearly a million tons being sunk. By contrast in November British losses at sea had fallen from 500,000 tons to 180,000 tons per month. This meant that the threat of starvation through the loss of imported food supplies had receded. Although Alan Turing had cracked the naval Enigma codes it was vital that the Germans did not realize this fact and so some naval losses were regarded as inevitable. It was one of the unpalatable facts of war.
Since the outbreak of the war there had been, to some extent, forced choices between meat and munitions imports. It was hoped that this could now be relaxed somewhat. The grain harvest had not been as good as had been hoped during the summers of 1940 and 1941 despite the land under cultivation having been increased by 45 per cent. Nevertheless, it was 50 per cent up on 1939 and there were good crops of potatoes, sugar beet, root vegetables and fodder. Dairy cows and cattle for meat were being maintained but poultry was still being neglected despite the promotional efforts made in the Great War and the acute shortage of fresh eggs. Austerity was still essential and Manchester once again suffered more than rural areas where extra fresh food could often be obtained more easily. On the plus side stocks of coal had increased and were now 2 million or 3 million tons larger than the previous year although domestic stocks would continue to be rationed.
