CONCLUSION

Insider threat is a critical issue for all organisations and one which poses significant risks – including loss of data, reputational damage, financial liability and potential regulatory fines. Insiders may act maliciously, but often can be acting by accident or otherwise innocently. As with all enterprise risk, preventing these risks is better than seeking to mend any damage already caused. In order to do this, rigorous and thorough data protection policies and controls are required together with regular table top exercises to “normalise” incident response and train up crisis response teams. If a breach does occur, it is important to ensure that the response is appropriate in the circumstances. However, given the need to carefully balance the rights of employees against these risks to the business, implementing an insider threat programme cannot be successful without careful consideration of the legal and regulatory implications.
