Chapter 8

ENTER THE CANBERRA

In addition to their primary role, modern jet bombers can be used to earn their keep effectively on Cold War operations, demonstrating once again the unique flexibility of air power.

The withdrawal of the Lincolns in July 1958 did not end the RAAF’s involvement in the Emergency bombing campaign. Under the auspices of the Far East Strategic Reserve (FESR), the Australian Government had ipso facto agreed to dispatch a bomber squadron to Malaya for the defence of the peninsula. With the airfield construction at Butterworth completed, it was time to make good on the arrangement. The news was announced by the C-in-C, the Earl of Bandon, in August 1957 after Cabinet and the British Government had agreed.111 The unit selected was No 2 Squadron flying the brand-new Canberra.
