Gears

Toothed gears are another way to transmit power. The movements of eight figures are controlled by the seven cams in The Motley Crew, and if the camshaft were directly turned by hand things would happen too quickly. The load from eight moving figures adds up too, so turning the shaft directly might be quite hard. The solution is to use a separate driveshaft connected to the camshaft through a set of bevel gears. These were bought at a car boot sale, because they looked as if they would come in handy, and are, I believe, part of a marine steering mechanism. The small cogwheel has to be turned about four times for one revolution of the larger cogwheel. The mechanical advantage makes the handle easier to turn, and slows thing down quite nicely as well.
