A lot of people hit so many balls working on their swing that pretty soon it becomes a dominant habit. They become so accustomed to it that they continue to work on their swing on the course and pretend they’re playing golf. As a result, they never actually play golf. They just go on the course day after day, work on their swing, and wonder why they are not playing better.

Most people who set out to learn how to play golf with instruction—finding a teacher, taking lessons, practicing drills—need to understand the three stages of competency: (1) unconsciously incompetent, (2) consciously competent, and (3) unconsciously competent.

If you’re a new golfer, you’re going to be unconscious about your swing or stroke, and you’re going to be incompetent at it. You are unconsciously incompetent at that move.

How Would You Play If Someone’s Life Depended on It?

Ask yourself, how would you play if you knew this would be the last tournament or last round you could ever play in? When I pose that question to my students, they all say, “Oh, I would play fearlessly. I’d really turn it loose! I would just play to play great. It would be my last shot at it.” Similarly, what if your wife or your children were kidnapped and someone told you that you would never see them again unless you shot in the 60s for your next four rounds? My students always say, “Well, I promise you one thing, I wouldn’t be worrying about my swing. I wouldn’t care about my putting stroke. I’d just go out there and find a way to get the ball in the hole.” Interestingly, I have heard many tour players say, “Get me into contention on the weekend, and that’s what I do. I forget about my swing and just find a way to score as low as possible. But on Thursday and Friday, I’m out there thinking about my golf swing, trying to find my game, worrying about the greens, complaining about course conditions, concerned about the weather, not liking my pairing, frustrated at the pace of play. I’m distracted by all this superfluous stuff. But get me in contention and I become single-minded and don’t care about anything but making a score.” That’s the mindset I’m talking about. I want you to have it all the time, in every round you play.
